The Palace of Knossos

Day 9
When you visit the site of Knossos, you see a lot of reconstruction with vivid painting by relatively modern archeologists. I have tried to include shots that show the reconstructed palace in its pleasant geographical surroundings.

This is the throne room...

These are modern imitations of ancient paintings...

This is in a museum and is part original fragments, part modern painting...

I have included items from the museum in Heraklion and the Archeological Museum in Athens.

This tiny fragment is probably the most famous painting from Knossos: she is called "La Parisienne."

This culture is probably the most attractive of the ancients, especially for its portrayal of women.

Santorini

Day 9
I can't decide which pictures I like best, so I include them all. Santorini is a collapsed volcano in the shape of a circle.

Both the tram and the donkey path are seen here...

These pictures are exquisite. I especially like the one of the people standing in the bar watching the sun set. All of these places need a more leisurely visit.

Ephesus

Day 7 Turkey

Ephesus is a well preserved Greek city from ancient times that is being gradually rebuilt by modern archeologists.

The red poppies had begun to bloom...

Our guide was most interested in this piece of clay pipe plumbing, the same diameter as modern plumbing, he claimed...

Modern archeologists try to reconstruct the original positions of the stones...

The library...

Sophia (wisdom), one of the few words I could read in Greek...

The theater...

Turkey

Day 7

Fellow digital camera users will know that it is impossible to time a picture with one. I had to shoot this tug a dozen times to get one shot with the Turkish flag unfurled.

Moni Filerimou

Day 8
We visited Moni Filerimou as part of our visit to Rhodes.
The grounds were filled with large noisy birds which turned out to be peafowl...

There is a church and a baptistery built over an ancient temple...

Outside are mosaics of the apostles...

And inside are these...

The grounds are beautiful...

With a gorgeous view of Rhodes...
I enjoyed this location very much.
