I thought I had lost this photo, and here it is. This is a view of the roofs of Venice taken in the 70s, with laundry hanging. A copy hangs in my kitchen.

So what do you suppose this is sitting on a balcony above the restaurant row near the Arena di Verona? The little pots say Reniero on the side, and a little research shows a law firm called Reniero & Associati located in Verona. But what are the mysterious figures? I admit I coveted them.

Trip Around Capri

Our trip to Capri included a boat trip around the island.

Various celebrity villas were pointed out as we went along.
In the left rock is a hole the boat sailed through.
The Italian announcer explained that for good luck at a precise spot one is to kiss one's beloved. Then later he said, "basta," enough kissing.

It is curious to me that I completely understand Italian only when they are talking about love.

The 26th of July is the feast day of St. Anne, the mother of Mary. This is celebrated with a procession in Florence, a procession that moves through the Piazza Signoria.

One of our group rented an apartment in the Piazza Signoria, the one in the center with the balcony.

From there we could look down on the activities below.

If you want to rent the apartment, it looks something like this.

The procession went right below his window.

He was a gracious and very generous host.

In other parts of town are this excellent singer near Piazza Republica.

Santa Maria Novella

The church Santa Maria Novella is near the train station and has the only original facade of the churches of Florence.

The treasures inside include the crucifix by Giotto,
and the Trinity by Masaccio. These two paintings have been recently restored and photographs of them are strictly forbidden. Oops.

The crucifix hangs at exactly the spot where it would have stood atop the rood screen of the middle ages, a barrier that prevented ordinary people from seeing the mass. The only church I've seen that still has a rood screen is San Marco in Venice.

The Masaccio painting is considered the first Renaissance painting.

Our apartment was directly across the street from the Gallaria Accademia which houses the David. On Monday it looked like this.

Any other day it was filled with people waiting in line for tickets or selling posters. (I am mad for this picture.)

This picture was taken for the street musician on the right.

I completely missed that I had caught the guy in a business suit and briefcase who rides to work every day on a bicycle.
Like I said. Laurie will be pissed, since she tried so hard to find him.

We decide to visit the medieval festival in Monteriggioni.

I have often seen Monteriggioni in the distance from the highway, but this time we turn off.

First we stop off to see jousting and notice a female jouster called "Mademoiselle."

The men prepare to do battle.

This man is guarding the entrance to the town.

We stop for some food--Italian cuisine before tomatoes and pasta.

There is a bagpipe and drum band.

We bargain for goods.

We see children trying out their jousting skills with wooden swords.

We walk to the other end of town to see the view.

A dragon appears.

And a knight on horseback to fight him.

The dragon is fatally wounded.

Fireworks end the evening.

Trip to the Blue Grotto

Our trip to the Amalfi Coast included a trip into the Blue Grotto on the island of Capri. This was my first and undoubtedly last time.

The white boat on the left with the canopy is the place where you pay. Here is a closer look:

This is our hunky boatman.

They pull on the chain fastened to the rock to control motion through the tiny opening.

And all for this. All of our group went in, but I was first.

We arrived in Siena the day after the Palio, the famous horse race that is run around the city square in the center of Siena. There was a lot of cleaning up still to be done.

The dirt put down to protect the horses and riders had not been completely removed.

We were treated to a proud showing of the winning horse.

Florence Fleur de Lis

The symbol of Florence is a variation on the French fleur de lis (according to Wikipedia pronunciation as in lease, not lee). The basic flower design includes unique spikes between the petals. Which one is the model? Is it these two from the Palazzo Vecchio?

Or perhaps this one from the Giotto campanile of the Duomo?

It can be spotted everywhere around town.

On utility covers.

In stone on old buildings.

On napkins.

On this municipal fountain.

I see that I have a lot more pictures of these, but you get the idea. It was the obverse of the Florin as well.

This was my favorite photo of art in the Louvre. It supports my theory that there is more Greek art in the Louvre than there is in Greece. The main situation here seems to be that the French are uninterested in male nudes and leave them shrouded in plastic while displaying the far less common females.
